Dark Triad Character Traits
This includes non-pharmacological cognitive improvements such as meditation and a healthy diet, as well as pharmacological cognitive improvements (such as adderall and ritalin), which are particularly high among certain professional groups and students.
Views on the second type vary, but this type of cognitive enhancement is usually viewed negatively by the general public, often because of its long-term detrimental effects, as well as because it is viewed as "cheating" and dishonesty.
However, other behaviors described as such are often positively perceived by those who exhibit traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, collectively known as the Dark Triad.
Thus, a group of Swiss researchers hypothesized that the traits of the Dark Triad positively correlate with a favorable attitude towards cognitive improvements. A sample of 326 employees from the United States was recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, and they were asked to fill out a short online questionnaire, including their general attitude to pharmacological improvement of cognitive functions on a scale of 9 points.
The results show that the traits of the Dark Triad were indeed positively associated with a favorable attitude towards pharmacological improvement of cognitive functions. In addition, openness to pharmacological improvement of cognitive abilities was not in itself related to either the competitiveness of traits or the competitive climate, which were also measured during the study. Machiavellianism was most associated with a positive attitude, with narcissism and psychopathic traits ranking second and third, although statistically insignificant in reliable analyses.
Together, these results show that context may be less important than personality when it comes to attitudes toward (pharmacological) cognitive improvement, but also that Machiavellianism is a mediating factor. In fact, although competitive traits and climate alone were not associated with pharmacological improvements in cognitive function, when combined with Dark Triad traits, there was such a relationship that a more competitive climate led to a more positive attitude. This suggests that people from the higher Dark Triad are either susceptible to influence or willing to use such contexts.
Pharmacological improvement of cognitive ability is associated with a variety of long-term harmful secondary effects, although people generally do not realize their severity. The current study, "The Dark Triad of Personality and Attitudes towards improving Cognitive Abilities," can help prevention campaigns more effectively target those at risk of using pharmacological substances that improve cognitive function and inform them about the dangers associated with them.
